BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Troy University track and field team wrapped up competition at the UAB Blazer Invitational on Saturday evening. Many newcomers got their first collegiate competition under their belts, while several returners posted impressive results at a meet that featured more than 1000 athletes.
"Our athletes competed hard and put in some great work today," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "Many freshmen showed that they can compete with the best, while the upperclassmen are already ahead of where they were at this point last season."
"A lot of the athletes learned to trust their event coaches this weekend," said distance coach Jeff Jenkins. "A lot has changed since the last track meet these ladies have run. I was especially happy with Julia's execution on her way to an indoor mile PR that moved her into seventh on Troy's all-time record book in the event."
"This was a big learning experience for our very young team," said throwers coach Shawn Williams. "Our freshmen got their feet wet and learned what Division I competition is about."
Dallas Worthy moved into the top-10 in program history in the 400-meters with a time of 59.40 seconds, in her first meet with the Trojans. Julia Ostendorf took 19th overall in the mile run with a personal-best time of 5:22.69.
Keaton Wallace took 14th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 20:45.69. Karina Moore and Tina Bokenfohr both competed in the 800-meter run, with Moore finishing in 2:38.44 and Bokenfohr in 2:44.29. Corina Cox placed 31st in the shot put in her first meet as a Trojan with a throw of 12.08 meters, while Aleeah Stigarll took 32nd in the high jump with a leap of 1.49 meters.
"At the end of the day, the athletes and staff want more," Lancaster said. "The efforts given showed a strong commitment to being ready for February."
The Trojans have two meets coming up next week, with the Samford Combined Event on Wednesday and Thursday and the Kentucky Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Check back with TroyTrojans.com for more information as we get closer to the events.
