Troy Volleyball Falls at Auburn in Four Sets

AUBURN, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team closed out the Active Ankle Challenge with a loss to tournament host Auburn on Friday, 3-1 (21-25, 25-15. 25-13, 25-22). The Trojans finished the tournament with a 1-2 record while Auburn went 2-1. Green Bay won the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record.
Troy (3-4) opened the match by holding Auburn to an .064 attack percentage in the first set, but the Trojans only hit .105 as a team on the match and Auburn rebounded to win the next three sets.
The Trojans were led offensively by true freshman Cassie Hendricks who posted nine kills and just two errors for a .233 attack percentage. No Trojan surpassed the 10-kill mark as three finished with seven.
Courtney Cohen posted 13 digs to up her season total to 128 and her career total to 1,646 digs, just 82 away from setting the Troy all-time career record.
Marija Zelenovic led the way for Troy with 17 digs while Alexandra Alexander was also in double figures with 12 digs. Alexander posted a double-double with 16 assists to go along with her dig total. Bruna Souza posted 12 assists.
Auburn (6-1) hit .314 and .306 in the second and third sets, respectively, but Troy didn't go away in the fourth set. The Trojans held the Tigers to a .182 attack percentage in the final frame while battling back from down six to within two at 24-22 before a service error by Troy ended the match.
The Tigers, who defeated No.10 Nebraska last weekend, were led by Camila Jersonsky who posted 14 kills and just one error for a .591 attack percentage. Two other Tigers bested the 10-kill mark while four went over 10 digs.
Troy's Kiah Cheatham was named to the all-tournament team after combining for 28 kills and just four errors for a .412 attack percentage in Troy's three matches on the weekend. Cheatham also posted 17 blocks on the weekend, including six against Auburn.
The Trojans return to the court next weekend when they travel to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic. Troy will take on Connecticut on Friday before playing Georgia Tech and St. John's on Saturday.
