Troy Volleyball Falls to UConn in Five Sets

ATLANTA – The Troy volleyball team cruised to a two-set lead, but Connecticut recovered to force a fifth set that was as close as it gets as the Huskies won over Troy, 3-2 (22-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-17, 18-16).Â
The Trojans continue play at the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic on Saturday with matches against Georgia Tech and St. John's at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
Troy (3-5) held Connecticut to .067 and -.028 attack percentages in the first two sets, allowing the Trojans to cruise to a two-set lead at the break. However, UConn (4-4) hit .415 and .361 in the next two frames to force the deciding fifth set.
Troy seemed to be in control of the fifth set, serving for the match three times, including with a 16-15 lead, before the Huskies scored three straight to take the deciding set, 18-16.
Kayla Pickart (15) and Marija Zelenovic (11) each posted double-figure kills, but each hit under .100. All-Sun Belt outside hitter Blair Winston hit .172 in her first full match of the season while Darby Griff and Kiah Cheatham each hit over .250 individually.
In addition to her eight kills, Griff posted a match-high seven blocks. Courtney Cohen posted 20 digs to lead all players while Kelley Curran (18), Alexandra Alexander (11) and Ali Dowdall (10) all posted double-figure digs as well.
Alexander recorded 42 assists for her fifth double-double of the season.
Karon Ratliff and Devon Maugle led UConn with 20 and 19 kills, respectively, with each posting an attack percentage over .300.
