BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Troy soccer team fell 6-2 at UAB on Friday night at West Campus Field, dropping the first-ever meeting between the schools in soccer.
"We played scared today for the first 80 minutes. UAB out-worked us," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. "When we finally got into a rhythm, it was too late. We needed this to open our eyes."
Six different UAB players scored a goal in the match as the Blazers outshot the Trojans 24-8. Troy (2-3-0) senior forward Cecilia Thorngren led the team with three shots, while five other Trojans recorded a shot in the loss.
The Blazers (4-1-0) struck early, taking a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the match on a goal from Johanna Liney. In the middle of the first half, UAB added back-to-back goals coming in span of two minutes as Kirsten Ebert and Kimberly Fincher quickly pushed the Blazers a 3-0 lead.
After UAB stretched its lead to 6-0, Troy found a rhythm as Thorngren netted a penalty kick in the 76th minute to kill the shutout. The goal marked Thorngren's third goal of the year and the senior's 11th career goal, placing her just outside of the top-10 in school history in goals scored.
In the 82nd minute, senior Maddie Tieken earned her second goal of the year, while Jane Latif recorded her second assist of the season. Troy goalkeeper Caitlin Buono finished with nine saves playing the full 90 minutes in the match.
Troy continues with its three-game road swing and faces Auburn on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Auburn Soccer Complex. The Trojans return home to face Murray State on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 1 p.m.
