Women’s Rodeo Rolls to Season-Opening Victory; Men Finish Sixth

MARSHALL, Mo. – The Troy women's rodeo team dominated the field at the season-opening MVC Vikings Stampede Rodeo hosted by Missouri Valley College this weekend.
The Trojan women scored 553.3 points well ahead of second-place Southern Arkansas' 160 points and third-place Murray State's 150 points; the team championship was Troy's third straight at the MVC Stampede. The Troy men finished in sixth place with 120 points as a team; Tennessee-Martin won the men's title with 760 points.
In the women's competition, Troy dominated the goat tying event scoring a combined 333.4 points between the trio of Kassandra Smith, Kesia Smith and Lanie Culligan. Kassandra Smith tied for first with 150 points after times of 7.2 second and eight second flat. Kesia Smith finished in third with 140 points thanks to times of 7.5 seconds and 7.9 seconds. Culligan posted times of 7.9 seconds and 8.6 seconds to tally 43.3 points and a fifth-place finish.
Kelsey Kennemer took second place in breakaway roping after recording times of three flat in the opening round and 3.2 in the second round. Kennemer teamed up with John Pitts in the team roping competition and scored 70 points with a 17.3 second average. She also scored 20 points in barrel racing.
On the men's side, Nelson Wyatt scored 20 points for the Trojans in steer wrestling with times of 6.6 and 8.2 seconds. Wyatt also scored 30 points in the team roping competition.
The Trojans return to action this upcoming weekend at Murray State.
