Athare and Ghorbel Win Doubles Draw at Big Easy

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Troy men's and women's tennis teams closed the Big Easy Classic on Sunday with Mansingh Athare and Sami Ghorbel winning the men's doubles draw.
Athare and Ghorbel had to win two tight matches against the top two seeds to take the title after the tournament was suspended due to rain on Saturday. The pair of seniors defeated the first seed, Blake Gregor and Rui Silva of New Orleans, in the semifinals, 9-7.
Athare and Ghorbel went on to beat the second seed, Paulo Alvardo and Juan Escobar of Southern Miss., in the finals, 8-6, to take the lone title of the tournament for either Trojan team.
On the women's side, Brooke Durden advanced to the finals of the third flight with two wins, but had to withdraw from the final with an injury. Durden defeated Kesica Jayapalan of Jackson State, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. She then knocked off Taly Meker of Louisiana Tech in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-2.
The Troy men and women return to the court on Friday, October 4, when they travel to the Duckworth Family Fall Classic at Clemson.Â
