SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Troy women's tennis team opened its 2014 dual-match schedule with a 4-3 road win over USC Upstate on Friday afternoon. The Trojans dropped the doubles point, but rebounded with four convincing singles wins.
Troy (1-0) lost at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, opening the season in a 1-0 hole, but responded on the singles courts with four straight-set wins.
"The team had a tough start in doubles," Troy first-year head coach Rawia Elsisi said. "But, I was proud of their performance and the way they came together to fight for this first win of the season."
Newcomer Margot De Haan got the comeback started as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 over the Spartans' Ana Baran.
After the Spartans (0-1) retook the lead with a win at No. 2 singles, another Troy newcomer, Trang Huynh, knotted things again with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Isabel Von Stryk. Hyunh was playing in her first match as a Trojan after just joining the team this semester.
Sophomore Anja Cosovic gave Troy its first lead at 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Cosovic picked up right where she left off last spring when she went 16-6 in singles and won seven of her last 10.
USC Upstate tied the match with a win at No. 4, but Troy's depth proved too much as Brooke Durden built on a good fall season with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lindsey Buenger at No. 6 singles. Durden went 5-2 in singles play this fall.
Complete results are below.
The Trojans return to the court on Saturday with two matches. Troy will travel to take on No. 13 Clemson at 8 a.m. CST before staying to play Charleston Southern on a neutral court at 12 p.m. CST.
