Troy Volleyball Falls in Five Sets, Cohen Ties Career Digs Record

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Troy volleyball team dropped a tight, five-set match to Delaware at the Clemson Classic on Friday, 3-2 (15-25, 28-26, 20-25, 25-17, 15-10). Senior libero Courtney Cohen recorded 21 digs in the match to tie the Troy all-time career record.
Delaware, an NCAA Tournament team in four of the last six seasons, fought back to take the final two sets after Troy held a 2-1 lead in the tournament opening match.
The Trojans continue a tough weekend schedule on Saturday when they take on Clemson and Alabama at 11:30 a.m. CDT and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
Troy (5-7) was led offensively by Marija Zelenovic who posted 17 kills and a .286 attack percentage. Blair Winston was also in double figures with 13 kills and just two errors. Troy outhit Delaware with a .242 attack percentage compared to the Blue Hens' .224 mark. Delaware did have 12 more kills, but also had 13 more errors.
Kiah Cheatham posted the best attack percentage of the day with a .438 mark thanks to seven kills and no errors on 16 attacks. Defensively, the true freshman led Troy with six blocks. The half dozen for Cheatham was part of 10.5 total team blocks for the Trojans, their fourth match over 10.0 this season.
Cohen's 21 digs brought her career total up to 1,728, tying Vickie Paciski's all-time Troy record. Zelenovic posted a double-double as she was also in double figures with 11 digs.
Troy held Delaware (7-5) to a -.034 attack percentage in the first set and scored 11 straight points to close the set with a 25-15 win after trailing 15-14. The second set was incredibly close with 19 ties and 10 lead changes as the Blue Hens won 28-26.
The Trojans took control by hitting .440 in the third set, on their way to a 25-20 win in a set that they never trailed in. However, Delaware fought back again and Troy hit a match-low .086 in the fourth set, a 25-17 Blue Hens win.
The fifth set was tight early, but with the scored tied 4-4, Delaware went on a six-point run to take a commanding 10-4 lead on their way to a 15-10 win. Troy had no attack errors in the final set and hit .300, but Delaware posted 12 kills and hit .321.
The Blue Hens were led by Katie Hillman who posted 22 kills while Katie Hank recorded 19. Ariel Shonk posted a match-high 24 digs.
