TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team closed out the Trojan Classic with an impressive offensive performance and goalkeeper Caitlin Buono posted her second career shutout in the Trojans' 5-0 win against Jackson State on Sunday at the Troy Soccer Complex.
"I think we had more quality going forward and I think we did a better job of taking our chances on goal than we did in the past three games," head coach Chris Bentley said. "I think possession was great has it has been, but we had possession with a purpose."
Troy (2-2) picked up four goals in the first half from four different scorers as senior forward Cecilia Thorngren led the Trojans with two goals, tying a career high. Thorngren's first goal came just wo minutes into the match, bending a shot from the right of the 18-yard box and into the top of the net.
In the 20th minute, sophomore forward Louise Cheng headed in her first goal of the season on a cross from Georgia Wallis. Freshman midfielder Necee Jennings added up her second goal of the season just two minutes later, taking a deflected corner and powering a shot past Jackson State (0-3-1) goalkeeper Kylie Christian.
Freshman Abby Reynolds netted her first career goal in the 42nd minute of the first half to record her first career goal on an assist from junior defender Paige McMillian.
Thorngren capped off the scoring in the 63rd minute, driving past two Jackson State defenders and firing a shot in to the back of the net. The Floda, Sweden, native now sits in second in Troy history with five game-winning goals and eighth in school history with 34 career points.
Troy's defenders and Buono held the Tigers off the scoreboard. Buono posted one save picking up her second clean sheet of her career, the junior's first since shutting out Middle Tennessee on the road in 2010.
Eight Trojans recorded points in the match as McMillian led Troy with two assists, while Cheng, Jasmine Fahrnbauer and Jane Latif all added assists.
Troy fired 23 shots in the match, placing 10 on goal, while Jackson State fired just four shots.
The Trojans return to action next Friday and begin a three-game road trip at UAB on Friday at 5 p.m.
