DELAND, Fla. – Maddie Tieken's goal right before halftime helped push Sunday's match to overtime, but Troy fell on the road at Stetson 2-1.Â
Â
After allowing an early goal in the 17th minute, Troy held Stetson off the scoreboard for almost 80 minutes, but the Hatters' Kait Jones snuck past the Trojan back line to score the game-winning goal just 8:45 into the first overtime, handing the Trojans their first loss of the season.
Â
"We left the game to chance today," head coach Chris Bentley said. "It was a tough way to lose, but we can fix some things moving forward and find a lot of success."
Â
Troy (1-1) battled back towards the end of the first half as Tieken netted her first goal of the year off an assist from Samantha Morgan to tie the match at 1-1 in the 40th minute. Both teams played through a scoreless second half, sending the match to overtime.
Â
The Hatters (1-0-1) fired 24 shots in the match, as Troy goalkeeper Caitlin Buono finished with eight saves in her first action of the season. The Trojans recorded seven shots, including three off the foot of Tieken, while Louise Cheng fired two shots, one on goal.
Â
Stetson got on the scoreboard early in the match with a 17th minute goal by Carmen Bernecker, who headed in a corner kick to give the Hatters the lead.
Â
Troy opens up a weekend homestand starting on Friday by hosting the 2013 Trojan Classic at the Troy Soccer Complex. The Trojans will face Louisiana Tech on Friday at 3 p.m. before closing out the tournament against Jackson State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
