TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team will open the 2013-14 athletic year as the Trojans hit the road to face Alabama State on Friday before traveling to Stetson on Sunday to begin the season.
The Trojans are coming off a 9-10-2 season in which Troy head coach Chris Bentley's squad appeared in the Sun Belt Conference Championships for the fourth straight season.
"We are excited to get the season underway," Bentley said. "These will be great games for us to develop as we move towards the conference slate."
Troy returns nine starters and 15 letterwinners from last year's team including Preseason All-Sun Belt selection Cecilia Thorngren.
Nine newcomers round out the roster, as five out of Troy's six top point scorers return, including senior forward Maddie Tieken, sophomore forward Louise Cheng and sophomore midfielder Jasmine Fahrnbauer tallied three goals apiece in 2012 while Thorngren, who set a school record last season with nine assists, added four goals a year ago.
Junior Paige McMillian and sophomore defenders Payton Donley and Kirsten Rendall anchor Troy's back line, while senior Madison Winter returns in goal.
Troy travels to Alabama State on Friday with kickoff set for 7 p.m. in Montgomery. Last season, Troy knocked off Alabama State, 5-3, at home to open the season.. The Trojans are 7-0 all-time against the Hornets, including a perfect 3-0 mark on the road.
On Sunday, Troy wraps up the first weekend of play with a noon match at Stetson. In the team's last meeting, the Trojans shut out the Hatters, 1-0, to conclude the 2012 Trojan Classic. The win marked the first time Troy's first home win over the Hatters; all-time the Trojans are 2-5-1 in the series.
The Trojans open up its home slate at the Troy Soccer Complex on Friday, Aug. 30, at 3 p.m. versus Louisiana Tech in the 2013 Trojan Classic. Admission is free to all Troy soccer events.
