CASPER, Wyo. – After completing one of its most successful regular seasons yet in the team's history, the 2012-13 Troy rodeo team capped off its 10 years in existence with a strong showing at the 2013 College National Finals Rodeo this past week.
Five Trojans made the 1,700 mile trip to Wyoming for the nation's premier college rodeo event. Sisters Kesia and Kassandra Smith competed in goat tying, Kelsey Kennemer and Cassidy Aldridge competed in breakaway roping, while Zack Mabry represented the men's team in the team roping event.
Each competitor at the CNFR was given three attempts at their respective event in hopes of advancing to the finale on Saturday. The top-12 finishers in each category advanced via the quickest overall time and point totals from their three rounds.
Aldridge, a senior, advanced to Saturday night's short-go round and finished the night sixth and eighth overall in the nation with a 23.2 second total. She opened her portion of the CNFR on Sunday with a 3.5 second run. The Folkston, Ga., native came right back on Monday with a 2.7 second run, but a 10-second barrier penalty put the run at 12.7 seconds. But, she didn't back down from there as she bounced back on Friday with a 4-second run to make the short-go with a total of 20.2.
Sisters Kassandra and Kesia, who dominated goat tying in the Ozark Region during the entire regular season, recorded three solid rounds in the event to finish T23rd and T43rd, respectively. Kassandra stayed consistent in the 7-second range with runs of 7.4, 7.3, and 7.3 to finish with a 22-second total. Kesia recorded times of 8.2, 7.5, and 10.2 to finish with a total of 25.9 seconds.
Troy's other competitor in breakaway roping, Kennemer, just a freshman, qualified for the CNFR after finishing the year second in the region just 15 points behind the region champion. Kennemer scored a no time in her first two runs, before finishing strong on Friday night with a 4.6-second run to finish the CNFR T43rd.
Mabry finished off what was already a successful year in team roping, with two solid runs in the event paired with his longtime partner, Ben Walker of Tennessee-Martin. The duo opened competition on Monday with a 7.1-second run before finishing with a no time on Tuesday, and a 15.5-second run on Wednesday to finish the event T22nd with a total of 22.6.
