MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Troy men's golf team will close out its 2012-13 season beginning Monday at the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship. The tournament will run through Wednesday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
All 11 of the Sun Belt's men's golf institutions will converge at the RTJ Shoals Fighting Joe Golf Course April 22-24 for the 54-hole tournament to close out the regular season. This marks the fourth year the tournament will be held at The Shoals.
Troy enters the event with a 301.67 team stroke average and 75.42 individual stroke average, good enough for eighth in the conference. Tolver Dozier, Jake Tucker, Phillip Brennan, Kyle Thommesen, and Wil Clowdus will represent the Trojans as part of the five-man roster.
Brennan, just a sophomore, enters ranked 17th statistically in the conference with a 74.67 stroke average which leads the team. The sophomore has competed in just seven of Troy's nine tournaments, but has come on strong as of late as one of Troy's top competitors.
Tucker sits 19th in the Sun Belt, less than two-tenths off Brennan's stroke average with a 74.85. The sophomore finished his last event, the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate, tied for 22nd, just two weeks after carding his season-best finish, a tie for seventh, at the Furman Intercollegiate. Tucker finished last year's tournament tied for 14th.
Dozier, who captured Troy's first individual title in five years last November, enters with Troy's third-lowest stroke average with a 75.22 mark. Since the Seminole Intercollegiate on March 15-17, Dozier has carded finishes of T17th, T24th and T27th. Dozier finished last year's conference championships tied for sixth as just a freshman for the Trojans.
Thommesen comes off his second-best season finish, a tie for 20th, at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship two weeks ago. The junior enters with a 77.63 stroke average and is one of just four Trojans who have competed in all of Troy's nine tournaments.
Clowdus takes a 78.44 stroke average into the three-day tournament and will look to improve on last year's Sun Belt finish of 49th.
Three of the Sun Belt's 11 teams enter the tournament ranked in GolfStat's top-100, including No. 38 North Texas, No. 49 South Alabama, and No. 82 Georgia State. Troy sits at 123rd in the country, while Arkansas State, UALR, FAU, Louisiana-Lafayette, ULM, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky all enter ranked outside the top-100.
The Sun Belt's top-two golfers, Jonathan Grey and Rodolfo Cazaubon, enter ranked 52nd and 46th in the country, respectively, by Golfweek's top-100.
The first round of the Sun Belt Championships from the Fighting Joe Golf Course will begin Monday morning at 8 a.m. Wil Clowdus will tee-off first for Troy at 8, with Thommesen, Brennan, Tucker and Dozier to follow in nine minute increments. The Trojans will be grouped with players from South Alabama and UALR. Live scoring will be available through GolfStat.com.
