GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Troy men's golf team wrapped up play at the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday with a third place finish after firing a final round 294.
The Trojans entered Sunday's final 18 holes fourth after carding just a team score 286 on Saturday, and shot a six-over par, 294 on Sunday to card their first top-five finish of the spring.
Play was scheduled to get underway around 9 a.m., but rain in the area forced tee-off times to be pushed back. Wil Clowdus was the first to tee-off for Troy at 12:10, and Jake Tucker followed up as the final Trojan at 12:50. Due to limited daylight time, only three of the 21 individuals were able to take part in the final round; the change did not affect Troy as it didn't have any individuals competing.
Jake Tucker finished with his season-best finish, a tie for seventh, after shooting two-over on Sunday. Tucker began on hole one and dropped two bogeys on the first four holes. The sophomore went on to eagle the sixth before bogeying two more remaining holes to finish the day at 74, and the tournament at two-under overall, 214, a season-best low 54-hole total.
Phillip Brennan grabbed Troy's second top-10 of the tournament after firing a one-over, 75 on Sunday. The sophomore knocked in two birdies on the fourth and sixth, before double-bogeying the eighth to make the turn at even-par. Brennan had an up-and-down back nine to finish the round at 75, and the tournament one-under overall, 215, tied for 10th (a season-best).
Tolver Dozier picked up a top-25 finish after shooting a two-over, 74, to match Friday's opening round score. Dozier shot under-par three times, and over-par three times on the front nine, before dropping three bogeys and two birdies on the back nine to finish the tournament tied for 24th at 220, four-over.
Wil Clowdus improved by more than 25 spots to end the tournament and finish tied for 49th at 226, 10-over, while Kyle Thommesen turned in a 227 to finish tied for 58th.
Samford's Drew Aimone and Iowa State's Scott Fernandez finished as co-champions individually, while Virginia Tech dominated the tournament with a third round 277 to finish the tournament at 21-under, 843 overall, to capture the team title.
Troy will be back in action April 1-2 at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate in Jackson, Miss.
