Troy Rodeo Set for Spring Opener
2/21/2013 11:11:00 AM | Rodeo
TEXARKANA, Ark. – After a long time off from collegiate rodeo action, the Troy men's and women's rodeo teams will kick-off their season Thursday at the CCUA Collegiate Rodeo.
The women enter the weekend just second in the Ozark Region standings behind Southern Arkansas. Troy accumulated 1,188.33 points in the fall and trail SAU by less than 100 points. Much of their success came early as they won two out of the first three events, including the season opener at Missouri Valley and the in-state showdown at West Alabama.
One Trojan is featured in the top-15 in barrel racing, as Morgan Sellars sits tied for eighth with 140 points. In breakaway roping, Kelsey Kennemer sits just fourth with 203 points, and is within striking distance of the leader Taylor Smith of Murray State. Anna Niewoehner has 120 points in the event thus far and sits tied for 11th heading into the spring.
Goat tying has been the highlight for the women, as four players rank in the top-15 in the region. Kassandra Smith leads the way in second with 360 points, while Kesia Smith is ninth with 175 points. Lanie Culligan enters 11th while Kennemer enters in 15th.
The men's team didn't enjoy as much team success, but have individual performances to look forward to in Lane Taylor, Nelson Wyatt, Zack Mabry, Troy Hatcher and Curtis Culligan.
As a team, the men enter in 10th with 510 points and are led by Mabry in the team roping category. Mabry, who teamed up with Tennessee-Martin's Ben Walker last fall, totaled 375 points as the duo sit second in the region behind another UTM duo of John Alley and Clark Adcock.
Action in Texarkana will begin Thursday night and will run through Saturday.
