TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's rodeo team maintained its stranglehold on the Ozark Region with a dominating performance at the Trojan Stampede this weekend at the Pike County Cattlemen's Association. Sophomore Kelsey Kennemer led the way for the Trojans as she scored 280 of Troy's 400 points.
The Trojan women won their third team title in four fall rodeos and lead Southern Arkansas by over 400 points in the Ozark Region standings. Troy's 400 points in the Trojan Stampede almost doubled up second place Southern Arkansas (222.5). Troy's men finished in a tie for eighth place with 100 points, while Missouri Valley took the men's title with 855 points.
Kennemer impressed the home crowd with a first place finish in barrel racing. The Anderson, Ala., native scored 50 points on both her runs and her average of 32.35 was the best in the field and pushed her total tally in the event to 160 points.
She followed that up with 120 points and a second place finish in breakaway roping thanks to an impressive second run. After failing to score on her first run, Kennemer clocked a time of 2.6 on her second attempt. It was the second fastest time of the day and her 5.8 average was the best in the field.
Moran Sellers added to Troy's total with 60 points in barrel racing after turning in the top time in the first round as the sophomore recorded a run of 16.14 seconds.
Kassandra Smith scored 20 points in breakaway roping with a run of 2.9 seconds on her first run. Smith also took home third place in goat tying after scoring 100 points as she turned in runs of 8.7 and 9.1 second over her two runs.
John Pitts accounted for all of the points on the men's side for Troy as he finished second in bull riding. Pitts earned 73 points in the first round but did not record a score on his second run.
The Trojans are done with competition for the fall and will return to action on Feb. 20-22 at the Cossatot Community College Rodeo in Texarkana, Ark.
