TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball team is set to host an exhibition game on Monday at Trojan Arena against West Florida at 7 p.m. Admission to the game is FREE as the Trojans begin their second season under head coach Chanda Rigby.
Live stats and live video of the game can be found at TroyTrojans.com. Live in-game updates can be found on Twitter by following @TroyWomensBBall.
Troy is coming off of a 7-24 campaign in 2012-13 that saw the Trojans lead the Sun Belt in scoring (70.2 ppg) under Rigby's fast-paced system. Troy ended the season on a high note, winning a first round game over South Alabama at the Sun Belt Championships, the Trojans' first win in five tries since the tournament moved to Hot Springs, Ark.
This season, the Trojans are working towards a Sun Belt Championships that has moved to Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, La., and changed formats. For the first time since 2004, only eight teams will qualify for the tournament, and two teams will be left out following the regular season.
Troy will look to a core of three seniors to lead the 2013-14 squad, including All-Sun Belt selection Joanna Harden who led the Trojans in scoring last season at 15.3 points per game. Brooke Bowie and Dominique Ross join Harden as seniors this season.
Troy also returns its second leading scorer from last season in sophomore Ashley Beverly-Kelley who averaged 12.1 points per game as a freshman in 2012-13. Beverly-Kelley's 376 points were the most scored by a Troy freshman since 1985-86.
Troy's six returners in 2013-14 will mix with six newcomers from Rigby's second recruiting class. The six newcomers include three true freshman and three junior college transfers who all come in as juniors.
West Florida is also in its second season under a head coach as Stephanie Lawrence Yelton led the Argonauts to a 6-21 record last season after four years as an assistant coach at Boston College.
West Florida is an NCAA Division II program and a member of the Gulf South Conference, a conference the Trojans were a part of from 1982 to 1991. Troy is 4-2 all-time against West Florida, including a 3-0 mark in Troy. The two teams haven't played since 1990-91 when West Florida won a neutral site game in Columbus, Ga.
