TROY, Ala. โ A second half goal by Necee Jennings lifted the Trojans (7-9-0) past South Alabama (10-5-2), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in a very physical match on senior day at the Troy Soccer Complex.
"You saw a team that battled today in a championship-type game," said head coach Chris Bentley.ย "There was everything that you could possibly see in there, just a lot of good competition.ย It was a great game."
Troy got the scoring started in the 67th minute, with Jennings scoring her team-leading seventh goal of the season.ย Annabell Simpson found an opening and slotted Jennings in on the right side.ย Jennings handled the rest, tucking the ball inside the left post.
South Alabama had its best chance to get the equalizer inside the final 10 minutes, as the Jaguars found themselves on a 2-on-1 breakaway.ย Jordan Duncan threaded the pass across the box to Kristyn Thacker, but Madison Winter held her ground, making the game-saving stop.
Winter made seven saves on the day, earning her fourth shutout of the season.ย As a team, Troy fired six shots on goal, coming off the boots of six different Trojans.
In all, four yellow cards were dealt out, with three going to the Trojans.
The win puts Troy just one point behind South Alabama in the Sun Belt Conference standings with just two regular-season games to play.
The Trojans return to action on Thursday, October 24, to host ULM in their final home contest of the season at 3 p.m., at the Troy Soccer Complex.
