BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Troy battled Western Kentucky for a scoreless 87 minutes, but the Lady Toppers picked up a late second-half goal by Iris Dunn to down the Trojans 1-0 on Friday at the WKU Soccer Complex.
Dunn's goal came off a deflection on a diving effort by Trojan goalkeeper Madison Winter in the 87th minute. Winter finished with six saves as she was saddled with her first loss of the year. The goal was just the second allowed by Winter in 451:50 of action this season.
"It was a good game between two good teams today. We felt as though we had our chances and so did (WKU)," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. "It's tough not to get out of here with a point. A draw you would have been a fair result today. Credit to Western Kentucky, they are good team and put the game away late."
Troy (6-8-0, 2-2-0) outshot WKU 5-4 in the first half, but the Lady Toppers picked up the pace on the attack in the second half finishing the match outshooting the Trojans 14-8.
Midfielders Jasmine Fahrnbauer, Necee Jennings and Samantha Morgan led Troy with two shots a piece. Fahrnbauer landed one shot on goal in the first half and gave Troy a chance in the 89th minute with a shot that deflected off the crossbar, while Jane Latif added a shot on goal in the second half. Abby Reynolds also added a shot in the first half.
WKU (6-3-4, 4-0-0) goalkeeper Nora Abolins held Troy off the scoreboard to earn her conference-leading sixth shutout of the season. Winter finished with a season-high six saves for Troy in the match.
Friday's match marked the first time Troy was shutout since Sept. 22 at Kennesaw State. Troy's eight shot attempts are tied for the second-fewest shots this season.
Caitlin Hesse and Chrissy Tchoula led WKU with a match-high three shots. Tchoula fired two shots on goal for the Lady Toppers. Haley Baldrige, Lauren Moats and Sydney Sisler posted shots a piece, respectively.
Troy continues Sun Belt play and wraps up a season-long three-match road swing at Georgia State on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Panthersville Soccer Complex.
