ATLANTA  – The Troy soccer team rallied late in regulation against Georgia State on Sunday with a goal in the 88th minute, but a score by the Panthers in the final minute of the first overtime downed the Trojans 2-1 at the Panthersville Soccer Complex.
Â
A pair of goals by Ashley Nagy, including the overtime winner, proved to be too much for Troy (6-9-0, 2-3-0). Nagy took a long ball through the air and slid a shot past Troy goalkeeper Madison Winter into the left corner of the net.
Â
"We did a great job fighting our way back in the game. With a goal called back (in the second half) and then hitting the crossbar in overtime, we definitely had our chances," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. "But, credit Georgia State they were competitors and fought for everything."
Â
Troy trailed until the 89th minute, but Jane Latif recovered a deflection off a free kick and buried a goal past Georgia State (4-8-1, 2-3-0) keeper Brie Haynes. The goal marked Latif's first score of the season.
Â
The Trojans had a pair of goals that were waved off due to offside calls. Louise Cheng used a diving header that rolled past Georgia State's back line, but the sophomore was ruled offside on the cross. Troy was flagged with a season-high 10 offside calls in the match, seven of which came in the second half. In overtime, Jennings fired one of two Troy shots in extra time, but the freshman's attempt hit the crossbar.
Â
In the first half, Georgia State took advantage on a set piece from a free kick as Ashley Nagy headed in the goal to the far post to put the Panthers on the board. Alyssia Feronti picked up the assist on the free kick for the Panthers.
Â
The Trojans were outshot by the Panthers 14-11 in the match. Jennings and Latif tallied three shots a piece in the loss, while Jasmine Fahrnbauer posted two shots. Winter finished with a season-high seven saves in the match. Abby Reynolds added an assist on Latif's goal in the 89th.
Â
Troy returns home to the Troy Soccer Complex on Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m. to face in-state foe South Alabama.
