TROY, Ala. – Fresh off a pair of Sun Belt wins, the Troy soccer team hits the road for two crucial conference matches this weekend as the Trojans face Western Kentucky on Friday at 1 p.m. before finishing off a three-game road swing at Georgia State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
Troy (6-7-0, 2-1-0) enters Friday's match tied for fourth place with Louisiana-Lafayette in the league's standings. The Trojans posted a pair of 1-0 results in last week's matches against Arkansas State and UALR to pick up their first two conference victories of the season.
Â
"Western Kentucky and Georgia State are both strong teams that can beat anyone on any given day," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said ahead of this weekend's matches. "Both are well-coached and will be tough to break down."
Â
Troy goalkeeper Madison Winter earned Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting a pair of shutouts and seven saves a week ago. Winter became the first Trojan keeper to win the award in program history. The senior has allowed just one goal in 361:50 of action and in her three starts this season Winter has recorded three clean sheets.
Â
The freshman duo of Necee Jennings and Abby Reynolds provided Troy's offense in last week's matches. Jennings recorded her third game-winning goal and the sixth of the season to push Troy past Arkansas State 1-0 last Friday. In Sunday's match at UALR, Reynolds took advantage of an empty net after a scrum in the area to pick her fourth goal of the year and second game-winner to give Troy another 1-0 victory.
Â
The Trojans continue to rank in the top-half in the Sun Belt in every offensive category. Troy is third in the conference in shots and fifth in points, goals and assists.
Â
Western Kentucky (5-3-4, 3-0-0) enters Friday afternoon's match atop the Sun Belt standings. The Lady Toppers have open conference play with three straight wins over ULM, Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas State. Despite being among the lowest in the league in goals scored per game (0.92), WKU has allowed just nine goals in 12 matches this season.
Â
Georgia State (3-7-1, 1-2-0) and Troy will meet for the tenth time in series history on Sunday, but the first as Sun Belt opponents. The Trojans trail the Panthers 3-6-0 in the all-time series, but Troy has won the last two contests between the teams.
Â
The Panthers are led in goal by Brie Haynes who ranks first in the Sun Belt with 76 saves and is tied for third in the league with Winter with three shutouts.
