TROY, Ala.- The Troy Trojan women's track and field team will open the indoor season this weekend when it travels to the UAB Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
“We are excited to finally find the track & field season kicking off after months of training,” said head coach Jill Lancaster. “The women's team has been training on their own for almost four weeks since finals finished. This is a huge commitment to the Troy Trojan program and themselves.”
“The UAB Invitational will have around 30 teams competing and the competition will be deep,” Lancaster said. “We expect to go in and compete hard. The team has had a great attitude this fall and we know our effort will be there.”
The UAB Invitational will take place in Birmingham this Thursday and Friday and will feature 30 teams including, Birmingham Southern, UAB, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Alabama and Western Kentucky.
The Trojans have a big senior class this year that the coaches are expecting to perform well throughout the season. Returners who will be leading the Trojans this season are seniors Ja-Courtney Alexander, Veronica Bryant, Brynn Forsythe and Jasmine Patton.
Alexander won the 400-meter at the Coach “O” Invitational during the outdoor track season in 2012 setting a personal best time of 54.35. Alexander is ranked in several categories on Troy's all-time track and field list including first in the 400-meter, second in the 60- and 200-meters and fifth in the 55-meter.
Bryant scored eighth in the Sun Belt Indoor Championships last season in the high jump while also setting a personal best of 11.86 feet in the triple jump at the Championships. Bryant is ranked sixth on Troy's all-time list for the long jump in the indoor season. Forsythe threw Troy's third all-time best weight throw last season at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships finishing eighth with a personal best of 55' 2 3/4.
Patton is a member of Troy's all-time ranking lists for the 55-meter hurdles (3rd), pentathlon (9th) and long jump. Patton scored sixth in the 55-meter hurdles last season at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships recording a personal best of 8.04. Patton scored a personal best of 2823 points in the indoor pentathlon last season.
The Troy track and field team and coaches are excited to start this season and have high hopes for what the season will bring. The team is delighted to get to UAB and see what progress has come out of its fall training.
“There are 6 weeks until our Sun Belt Conference championship and almost two weeks before we travel to the site of our championship at Arkansas State,” said Lancaster. “This competition will provide valuable information as we prepare for the indoor season in the upcoming weeks.”
