TROY, Ala. – Despite trailing by seven points in the final six minutes, the Troy men's basketball team (8-12, 3-6) knocked off the Arkansas State Red Wolves (11-8, 5-5), 74-67, in overtime at Trojan Arena. Emil Jones's last second 3-pointer sent the game to overtime, where the Trojans took over, not allowing a field goal.
“Tonight, this game featured two teams that played defense,” head coach Don Maestri said after Troy's comeback win. “Both teams had to hit a bunch of tough shots, but down the stretch we had a lot of guys step up and knock down some clutch shots.”
Troy held Arkansas State to just free throws in the final six minutes of regulation and all of overtime, as the Red Wolves missed their final 12 field goal attempts, allowing Troy to come back. With just nine seconds to play, the Trojans inbounded the ball to Jones, who took a highly-contested 3-pointer that found the bottom of the net.
In overtime, Troy outscored Arkansas State 13-6, with each team hitting 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Tevin Calhoun played tremendously in the extra frame, hitting a corner 3-ball to give the Trojans a lead they would not relinquish.
Troy started off the second half by causing three straight turnovers and converting easy layups on the other end, pulling to within one. The Trojans took their first lead of the second half on a nice put-back by Josh Warren.
The Trojans finished the game at 48.2 percent from the field (27-of-56) and 35.0 percent from range (7-of-20). Arkansas State started hot but cooled off, finishing at 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the field and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from beyond the arc. Troy out-rebounded Arkansas State 37-34.
Jones led the Trojans again, scoring 16 points. Antoine Myers finished with 13 points, while Hunter Williams and Calhoun also scored in double-figures. Jeff Mullahey had six points, coming on two clutch 3-pointers.
Troy opened up the game with two quick buckets, but the Red Wolves went on an 11-0 run immediately after. The Trojans stayed even the rest of the half, trailing 33-26 at the break. Troy got even scoring across the board, with Chambers leading the way at six points. The Red Wolves came out the gate hot, shooting 63 percent in the first half and 83 percent from beyond the arc.
The Trojans now travel to Monroe, La., to face ULM on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Troy defeated ULM earlier in the season at Trojan Arena, 64-55.
