WILMINGTON, N.C. – Cecilia Thorngren scored her fourth goal of the season in dramatic fashion, burying the game-winner with just 54 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift Troy (5-2-1) past Elon (1-4-1), 2-1, at the UNCW Courtyard Marriot Wilmington Invitational.
The Trojans took an early lead but needed double overtime to finish off the Phoenix after conceding a goal late in the second half. Thorngren scored a goal and added an assist on the day and currently leads the team with 13 points on the season. Chelsey Williams picked up the assist in overtime, her third of the season.
“We had some incredible passages of play today,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “To find a way to win after giving up an unlucky goal showed an unbelievable amount of resilience. We will let this sink in and shift our focus to Sunday.”
Payton Donley got the Trojans on the board early, burying a header off of a corner kick in the seventh minute for her first collegiate goal. Thorngren picked up her team-leading fifth assist of the season on the corner.
Simi Dhaliwal leveled the score for the Phoenix in the 75th minute, ending a Trojan shutout streak that had lasted over 279 minutes over four matches.
“Elon gave us a lot of problems today,” Bentley said. “It was a great challenge for us in our preparation for conference.”
Troy wraps up the Invitational on Sunday when it faces the host team, UNC Wilmington at 11 a.m. The Trojans have never faced the Seahawks.
