TROY, Ala. – The Trojans (5-6-1, 0-2-0) battled back with a late goal to force overtime against FIU (5-4-1, 2-0-0), but the Panthers scored 1:21 in to the extra frame to take the 2-1 win.
“I think we did a lot of good things to create opportunities for ourselves,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “We showed good possession at times, we showed good organization at times. I think it's just unfortunate that we ended up giving up a goal in overtime.”
Chelsea Leiva netted her fifth goal of the season early in the first overtime, after breaking past the Trojan defense, slotting the ball into the lower left corner.
Katie Comeno-Lewis was tremendous in net for the Trojans, making 11 saves on the day.
Scarlett Montoya got the Panthers on the board first, placing a strong shot past the Trojan goalkeeper from just insider the 18-yard box in the 48th minute.
Jasmine Fahrnbauer tied the score up in the 70th minute, scoring her first career goal, a powerful header from inside the 6-yard box. Cecilia Thorngren sent in a great cross, after Chanel Elgin earned the corner amongst three Panthers defenders, that Fahrnbauer buried into the back of the net.
The Trojans battled through an incredible flurry of shots by the Panthers late in the second half, with Comeno-Lewis making two tremendous saves within moments of one another to keep the score tied at one.
Chelsey Williams had the Trojans' best chance in the first half, coming in the 11th minute. After receiving a pass from Louise Cheng from the left side, Williams blasted a shot from close range, but FIU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Savage made an incredible save to keep the Trojans off the board.
The Trojans are back in action on Sunday, September 30 at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to North Texas.
