Soccer Opens Sun Belt Play With Pair of Matches Against Florida Schools

TROY, Ala. – Sun Belt play begins this weekend, as Troy (5-4-1) hosts Florida Atlantic (2-5-0) on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and FIU (3-4-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m at the Troy Soccer Complex.

Troy enters the weekend after dropping its final non-conference game of the season last Sunday to Mercer, 4-1. Chelsey Williams scored the lone goal for the Trojans, capitalizing on a corner kick in the second half.
Cecilia Thorngren currently leads the team and the Sun Belt in three statistical categories. Her 13 points, five assists and three game winning goals are all tied for the most in the conference. She also has four goals on the season, third most in the league. Williams is second on the team with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
Florida Atlantic ended a three-game slide on Sunday with a 4-3 win over UAB. Claire Emslie recorded the hat-trick, while Dani Dangremond scored once. Emslie currently leads the Owls with 10 points on four goals and two assists.
The Trojans are 1-11-0 all-time against the Owls, including a 2-1 overtime loss last season in Boca Raton, Fla.
FIU dropped a pair of matches at the Loews Ventana Canyon Cats Classic in Tucson, Ariz. last weekend, to Arizona and Arizona State. Chelsea Leiva leads the Panthers this season with 10 points on four goals and two assists, while Scarlett Montoya is second with three goals and one assist for seven points.
Troy is 1-6-0 all-time against FIU and has dropped five straight. Last season, the Trojans were defeated by the Panthers 3-0 in Miami, Fla.
