TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team (3-2-1) kicked off the 2012 Trojan Classic with a 0-0 draw against the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (4-0-1) on Friday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex.
The Lady Techsters controlled the ball for much of the first half, including two open opportunities in the Trojan box that were stifled by goalkeeper Maddie Winter.
Louisiana Tech had an opportunity with less than three minutes remaining in the second half, as Andrea Weng sent in a pass to Mo Rockwell, before Troy's Kirsten Rendall made a tremendous tackle from 12 yards out.
The Trojans' best chance came with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation, as Katie Cersley sent in a great ball across the middle toward Chelsey Williams, but Louisiana Tech goaltender Caitlin Updyke came off her line to clear the ball, crushing Williams in the process.
Katie Comeno-Lewis came up big for the Trojans in net in the first overtime, deflecting a deep shot from Paige Dunn off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
“Today we were organized defensively, but didn't do a good enough job on the counter,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “We were a victim of our own misfortune.”
Troy will face the Stetson Hatters in its second game at the Trojan Classic at 12 p.m. on Sunday at the Troy Soccer Complex.
Jacksonville State took down Stetson, 2-0, in the first game. Brianna Boutziouvis and Kelsey Bright each scored for the Gamecocks in the win.
