Soccer Heads to South Carolina for Pair of Non-Conference Matches

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Troy soccer team looks to get back to its winning ways with a weekend trip to South Carolina for a pair of games against Southern Conference opponents. The Trojans will take on Wofford on Friday at 5 p.m. at Snyder Field and then travel to Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville to take on Furman at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

Troy began its season with a pair of wins against SWAC opponents before falling to Ole Miss on Wednesday, 5-0. Junior forward Cecilia Thorngren was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals and adding four assists over the weekend.
Thorngren leads the team with 10 points on the year, with Chelsey Williams in second with two goals and two assists for six points. Overall, seven different Trojans have recorded a goal this season and 10 have recorded a point.
Wofford enters the contest after defeating Gardner-Webb, 1-0, in its season-opener. Maureen Buff scored the Terriers' lone goal, while senior goalkeeper Erika Christensen picked up the shutout.
The Trojans have only met Wofford once, earning a 6-1 win at home to kick off the 2010 season. Maddie Tieken recorded the hat trick in her first collegiate game, while teammates Nikki Stamaris and Cecilia Thorngren each added a goal.
Furman is 1-1 on the season after defeating North Florida, 2-0, and falling to Georgia, 2-1 last weekend. Hannah Stanifer leads the Paladins with three points on one goal and one assist, while Stephanie DeVita and Dee Makris each have one goal. Furman will host Clemson on Friday.
Troy lost in its only meeting with Furman, in 1999.
