TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team (2-0-0) takes the pitch against SEC opponent Ole Miss (2-0-0) on Wednesday at 3 pm at the Troy Soccer Complex. Troy has never faced Ole Miss, but battled to a 1-1 tie against the only SEC team it played last season, Mississippi State.
The Trojans are looking to continue their impressive start to the season, after scoring five goals in each of their first two games. Troy is 2-0 for the fourth time in program history, and the first time since 2009.
Cecilia Thorngren has led the way for the Trojans, scoring three goals and adding four assists, on her way to being named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week. Her 10 points through two games is the most by a Trojan in program history. She currently leads the Sun Belt with 10 points.
Chelsey Williams now sits second in the conference behind Thorngren with six points. Her 11 shots are tops in the Sun Belt.
Troy began the season with a 5-3 win over Alabama State. After trailing 2-0 early, the Trojans scored five straight goals to take the win. It was just the third time in program history that Troy has come back from a two-goal deficit. Maddie Tieken got the scoring started for the Trojans with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Alissa Jones scored from the penalty spot early in the second to tie the game up at two, followed by goals by Katie Cersley and Thorngren in less than three minutes. Williams finished off the scoring in the 66th minute.
The Trojans then went on to defeat Alcorn State, 5-0, on the road. Thorngren proved to be the difference, scoring the first two goals for Troy in the 22nd and 24th minutes. Thorngren then assisted on a goal by Williams in the 31st minute to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead at the half. Nikki Stamaris and Jane Latif would both score in the second half to help secure the 5-0 victory.
As a team, Troy's 10 goals in the first two games is the second most in program history, behind the 16 goals scored to begin the 2001 season.
Ole Miss also enters Wednesday's contest 2-0, after defeating Saint Louis and Middle Tennessee by identical 3-1 scores. Mandy McCalla leads the Rebels this season with six points on two goals and two assists. Rafaelle Souza has scored once in each game, while Maddie Cunningham has one goal and one assist.
