TROY, Ala. – The Troy baseball team travels to Louisiana-Lafayette for a key Sun Belt Conference series this weekend as teams continue jockey for position in the Sun Belt standings.
The Trojans (20-25, 8-13 Sun Belt) and Ragin Cajuns (20-23, 8-13) enter the weekend tied for ninth in the Sun Belt standings, but both are just one game behind UALR, ULM and Western Kentucky for sixth place and just three games out of fourth place. The top eight teams qualify for the Sun Belt Tournament at the end of the season. ULM and UALR play each other this weekend and Western Kentucky is at league-leading Florida Atlantic.
All three games will be broadcast live on the Troy IMG Sports Network with local coverage on 94.7 FM and worldwide coverage on TroyTrojans.com or via the Tune-In Radio app on your smartphone by searching for WTBF-FM. Fans can also follow the action on TroyTrojans.com with live stats.
Saturday's contest will be televised live on the Sun Belt Network with local coverage in Troy on CSS. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The series at Tigue Moore Field is the last on the road for Troy this season; the Trojans host ULM and South Alabama the final two weekends of league play. The Trojans have won two of their last three Sun Belt series and are an extra-inning defeat away from three straight series victories.
Troy's last series victory was its most impressive as the Trojans took two-of-three from Florida Atlantic last weekend at Riddle-Pace Field; Troy has won nine of its last 10 Sun Belt series at home. It was the first Sun Belt series loss of the season for the Owls and Troy's 9-0 victory in the finale marked the first shutout Florida Atlantic has ever suffered in a Sun Belt regular season game in program history.
A trio of Troy pitchers held Florida Atlantic scoreless over the final 14.1 innings of the series. Thomas Austin started the dominance on the mound with 5.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen on Saturday to pick up the victory. The junior right-hander is second the Sun Belt Conference with a 2.32 ERA on the season and a remarkable 1.14 ERA in league games. Ryan Brady tossed the first six innings on Sunday before Nate Hill closed out the Owls over the final three frames.
Senior right-hander Tyler Ray (3-5, 5.05) will start the opener on the mound for the Trojans one week after setting the school record for career starts. Joe Hernandez (3-2, 5.80) is Saturday's scheduled starter for Troy and Brady (1-3, 3.05) will get the call in the finale.
Logan Pierce leads the Trojans entering the weekend batting at a .382 clip with 15 doubles, five home runs, 40 RBIs and a .481 on-base percentage. Tyler Vaughn carries a 10-game hit streak into the weekend series and is second on the club batting .333 on the season. Danny Collins has a team-leading 25 extra-base hits, while Boone Shear leads the club with 44 RBIs.
ULL has dropped three straight Sun Belt series entering the weekend set with Troy. The Ragin Cajuns are batting .263 as a club led by Ryan Leonards (.333), Tyler Girouard (.323) and Chase Compton (.309). Freshman Dylan Butler has hit seven of ULL's 13 home runs on the season.
Right-hander Jordan Nicholson (3-5, 4.27) will start opposite Ray on Friday night for the Cajuns, while southpaw Chris Griffitt (5-2, 4.05) will start Saturday's contest. ULL has not announced a starter for the finale on Sunday.
