BOX SCORE
MIAMI – FIU used a four-run seventh inning to break a 6-all tie and defeat Troy 11-7 in the Sun Belt Conference series opener Friday night at University Park; the Panthers got on the board with a five-run fourth inning.
Troy knotted the game with two runs in the top half of the seventh inning. Boone Shear led off the frame with his team-leading sixth home run of the season and Brandon Brown tied the game later in the frame with a single to score Jo-El Bennett after he reached on an error.
Tyler Ray struck out Nathan Burns to open the home half of the seventh and issued a single to T.J. Shantz. Nate Hill came out of the bullpen to face Pablo Bermudez with an inherited 1-1 count; Bermudez drew a walk and then four straight Panthers picked up singles, including two-run singles by Jabari Henry and Aramis Garcia to give FIU (17-13, 5-5 Sun Belt) a 10-6 lead.
Tyler Vaughn pulled the Trojans within one, 10-7, with a double in the top of the eighth to score Danny Collins. Vaughn led Troy with three hits in five at-bats, while Jakob Nixon, Shear and Brown all had two hits.
Troy (13-16, 3-7) first baseman Logan Pierce extended his hit streak to 19 games with a line drive single to left-center field in the sixth inning; he finished the game 1-for-4.
Ray retired eight straight to open the game before FIU strung together six hits between its next eight batters. Shantz led off the fourth with a single and Mike Martinez reached on an infield single on a close play at first. Henry then took an 0-1 offering from Ray over the fence in left field for a three-run homer.
Aramis Garcia and Adam Kirsch reached on back-to-back singles to set up some controversy. Oscar Aguirre hit a comebacker which Ray snagged behind his back. Garcia, who had moved to third on a wild pitch, was caught in a rundown between the plate and third base. Troy third baseman Austin Golden had possession of the ball and went to apply the tag on Garcia who then lowered his shoulder and ran Golden over to dislodge the ball. Catcher Brandon Brown then picked up the ball and appeared to tag Garcia before he touched the plate, but Garcia was called safe for FIU's fourth run of the frame. Julius Gaines gave FIU a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice fly.
Troy head coach Bobby Pierce immediately came out of the dugout to discuss the call and following an umpire conference the play stood.
Garcia and Shantz both had three hits for FIU, while Martinez, Henry and Gaines each had two. FIU finished the game with 15 hits as a team, while Troy pounded out 13 base hits. Bermudez added an RBI ground out in the eighth to cap the scoring.
The Trojans got after Panther starter Mason McVay for four runs in the first inning with five singles and a bases loaded walk. Shear loaded the bases with a check-swing single that died just inside the foul line between third and home. Bennett drew a walk to plate the first run, Vaughn followed with a single to score a run and Brown punched a single through the left side of the infield to bring home two more runs.
Eddy Pidermann (5-0) picked up the win for FIU after entering the game in the sixth inning in relief of McVay. Pidermann allowed three runs – two earned – on five hits in four innings of work; McVay was charged with four runs on eight hits.
Tyler Ray (2-3) suffered the loss for Troy after he was charged with seven runs – five earned – on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work. Hill was the first man out of the Trojan bullpen and allowed four runs on five hits in one inning.
Game two of the series is set for 5 p.m. (CDT) Saturday.
