Troy Travels to FIU for Three-Game Sun Belt Series

TROY, Ala. – Troy returns to Sun Belt Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at FIU. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday; all times are Central.
The series pits last year's top two teams in the final Sun Belt standings and this season's preseason co-favorites. Both teams enter the weekend series looking to establish a rhythm in league play as the Trojans are 3-6 in Sun Belt action and the Panthers are 4-5.

Tyler Ray (2-2, 3.91) will take to the mound Friday night for the Trojans. The senior right-hander has struck out 40 and walked just seven over 48.1 innings this season; he entered the week 46th in the NCAA with a 5.71 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 48th in the country allowing just 1.3 walks per nine innings. Troy (13-15) will announce its Saturday and Sunday starting pitchers later in the weekend.
Logan Pierce continues to lead the Trojans and Sun Belt Conference at the plate batting at a .408 clip after hitting safely in 18 straight games. The junior first baseman is batting .500 during his hit streak and has multiple hits in 13 of the 18 games. Pierce also leads the league in on-base percentage (.530) whiling ranking second in runs scored (29) and third in slugging percentage (.602).
The Trojans, who finished second in the NCAA in doubles per game last year, are continuing to pound the gaps this season with 63 two-baggers – three behind league-leading UALR and nine in front of third-place Louisiana-Lafayette. Troy is fourth in the Sun Belt with 20 home runs and second with 89 extra-base hits (UALR, 116).
Sophomore third baseman Danny Collins is second in the league with 10 doubles while freshman catcher Jake Harrell is fifth with nine doubles and senior outfielder Boone Shear is eighth with eight doubles.
FIU, who took 2-of-3 from ULM last weekend, is coming off a pair of mid-week victories against over-matched Florida A&M; the Panthers (16-13) defeated the Rattlers 13-0 and 9-4.
Junior left-hander Mason McVay (1-2, 3.00) is scheduled to start the opener for the Panthers on the mound and Michael Ellis (1-2, 3.46), a sophomore right-hander, is slated to go on Saturday; FIU has not announced a Sunday starter.
Mike Martinez leads the Panthers at the plate with a .366 batting average to go along with three home runs and a team-high eight doubles. Preseason SBC Player of the Year Pablo Bermudez is batting .320 with six doubles, no home runs and 12 RBIs.
FIU has committed a league-high 56 errors, which is 13 more than the next closest team, which has led to 33 unearned runs. The Panthers enter the weekend leading the Sun Belt with a 3.69 staff ERA and are second batting .295 as a club.
