BOX SCORE
MIAMI – FIU scored three runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 5-3 victory over Troy Saturday night in Sun Belt Conference play at University Park. Jabari Henry hit a pair of two-run homers for the Panthers, including the game-winner in the eighth.
Troy carried a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning after stellar bullpen work from Thomas Austin, Nate Hill and Tyson Workman. Workman struck out Pablo Bermudez to open the eighth and Mike Martinez followed with a single to left just under the glove of a diving Boone Shear.
Henry then took an 0-1 offering from Workman over the wall in left field to give FIU the 4-3 lead. Oscar Aguirre gave the Panthers (18-13, 6-5 Sun Belt) an insurance run with an RBI double following a Troy (13-17, 3-8) error.
Jakob Nixon gave the Trojans the lead with a two-out single in the fourth. Tyler Vaughn scored on the play after he reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a walk by Brandon Brown.
Danny Collins led the Trojans at the plate with a 3-for-5 night. Troy, who out-hit FIU 11-7, got two hits from Nixon, Vaughn and Shear. Logan Pierce extended his hit streak to 20 games with an RBI single in the third.
Pierce's single in the third came after Brown lead off the inning with a single and moved to second on an Ali Knowles sacrifice bunt. Following a strikeout, Tyler Hannah walked and Pierce singled home Brown. Collins knotted the game at 2-all with a single to right field to plate Hannah.
Henry, who has nine RBIs in the series, put the Panthers on the board with his first home run of the night and third of the series after Martinez led off the second with a single. Martinez finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Austin was nearly unhittable in 4.1 innings for Troy in relief of starter Ryan Brady. Austin struck out five and allowed just one hit without giving up a run. Hill struck out Nathan Burns with two on and one out in the seventh before Workman got T.J. Shantz to pop up and end the inning.
John Costa (2-1) worked just a third of an inning for FIU and picked up the win, while Michael Gomez worked around a two-out walk in the ninth for his seventh save of the season.
Workman (2-3) was charged with the loss after he allowed three runs – two earned – on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The teams will meet for the final game of the series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. (CDT).
