BOX SCORE
TROY, Ala. – Three Auburn pitchers combined to hold Troy to four hits in a 7-0 victory Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field. It was Auburn's first victory at Troy since 2009.
Creede Simpson gave the Tigers all the offense they would need with a solo home run with one out in the first inning. The ball looked like a pop up off the bat, but the wind eventually carried it just over the wall down the left-field line.
Jakob Nixon led off the Troy half of the first inning with a single and the Trojans (17-23) had runners on the corners with one out following a single two batters later by Logan Pierce. However, a double play ended the inning and Trey Cochran-Gill held the Trojans without a hit until Tyler Vaughn led off the fifth with a single.
Auburn (22-19) pulled away with three runs in the fifth. An error allowed Jay Gonzalez to reach to open the frame and Blake Austin followed with a single. Zach Alvord doubled down the line in left for the first run of the inning before Mitchell Self provided a sac fly and Ryan Tella added an RBI double.
Tella led off the seventh with a home run to straight-away center field and Bobby Andrews followed with a sac fly later in the frame. Garrett Cooper capped the scoring for Auburn with a ground out in the eighth.
Auburn's Friday-night starter Derek Varnadore worked three scoreless innings before giving way to Justin Bryant in the ninth.
Troy catcher Brandon Brown continued to mow down batters on the base paths. He threw out Gonzalez trying to steal second in the second inning; it was just the fourth time in 23 attempts this season that Gonzalez had been caught stealing. Up seven in the ninth, Auburn head coach John Pawlowski elected to try and steal third base with Andrews, but Brown gunned him down; it was just the second time in 10 attempts that Andrews had been caught. Brown has thrown out eight of the 14 base runners that have attempted to steal against him this season.
Cochran-Gill (4-1) pick up the win for Auburn with five scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and combined with Varnadore and Bryant to hand Troy its first home shutout since 2009. Ryan Brady (0-3) was charged with the loss for Troy after he allowed four runs – three earned – on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work.
The Trojans have a quick turnaround as Alabama A&M comes to Riddle-Pace Field Wednesday at 6 p.m.
