BOX SCORE
TROY, Ala. – Sophomore Ivan Carter made his collegiate debut Wednesday night for Troy and turned in four shutout-innings as the Troy defeated Alabama A&M 9-1 at Riddle-Pace Field.
Carter, a native of Irondale, Ala., held the Bulldogs to just one hit and struck out three before giving way to the bullpen. Carter's solid work earned him the victory for the Trojans. Chris Fisher turned in two scoreless innings before William Teal and Cass Abercrombie each threw one inning of shutout baseball.
Ali Knowles, who was 2-for-4 with a double at the plate, pitched the ninth for the Trojans and gave up a run on two hits; he did strikeout the side. It was the first appearance for Knowles on the mound in a Troy uniform; he originally signed with the Trojans as a pitcher, but suffered an injury which forced him to the outfield.
The Trojans (18-23) jumped on Bulldog starter Sanchez Tucker early for three runs in the first and four in the third. Jakob Nixon led off the Troy half of the first with his first home run of the season. Following a pair of outs, Boone Shear, Danny Collins and Austin Golden strung together consecutive singles to put three more runs on the board.
Shear and Collins both had two hits in the game as did Tyler Hannah, who doubled in back-to-back at-bats in the third and fourth innings. Collins started at first base for the first time this season and drove in two runs to bring him within two of Shear's team-leading 41 RBIs for the season.
Hannah and Pierce led off the third with back-to-back doubles and Collins got in the mix with a two-run double after Shear drew a walk. Shear has now reached base in 28 straight games and hit safely in 18 of the past 20 contests.
Shear put the Trojans in front 8-0 with a two-out single back up the middle after Hannah doubled into the gap in left-center field with one out in the fourth. Knowles scored in the eighth on one of three Alabama A&M (8-36) errors on the night after he doubled with one out.
Walton Ashwander drew a one-out walk in the top of the ninth and came around to score the only run of the game for the Bulldogs on a single back up the middle by James Brown. Brown led Alabama A&M with a pair of hits and two walks. Tucker (0-5) went the distance for Alabama A&M; he struck out two, walked three, surrendered 12 hits and nine runs – seven earned – in the losing effort.
Troy returns to Sun Belt Conference action this weekend when league-leading Florida Atlantic visits Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and the series will conclude at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
