TROY, Ala. – The Troy baseball team continues its four-game homestand this weekend looking to build on the momentum of an eight-run victory over in-state rival Jacksonville State earlier in the week.
Troy hosts Sun Belt Conference foe Middle Tennessee in a three-game series at Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch between the Trojans and Blue Raiders is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and then for 1 p.m. in the finale on Sunday.
The Trojans got multiple hit games from five players in the 15-7 victory over Jacksonville State, including a career-high tying four hits from Logan Pierce. Pierce, who saw his 20-game hit streak snapped on Sunday, bounced back by going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored against the Gamecocks.
Danny Collins added a pair of hits and drove in four runs, while Jakob Nixon continued to excel in the lead-off spot with a 3-for-5 night. Nixon has multiple hits in four straight games (9-for-18) and in each of the past seven games he has recorded a hit. Since moving into the top spot of the lineup 10 games ago, Nixon is batting .348 with six RBIs, two doubles and 11 runs scored.
Troy (14-18, 3-9 Sun Belt) enters the weekend series with Middle Tennessee looking to regroup after suffering a three-game sweep at FIU last weekend; the three games were decided by a combined eight runs with a pair of two-run contests.
Senior right-hander Tyler Ray (2-3, 4.28) will once again get the Friday night start for the Trojans while junior right-hander Hunter Adkins (4-3, 3.59) will get the call in the opener for the Blue Raiders.
Freshman southpaw Johnathan Frebis (3-2, 3.09) will start game two for MTSU; Frebis took a perfect game into the eighth inning earlier this season against Florida Atlantic. Junior right-hander Jonathan Sisco (5-1, 1.76) will start Sunday's contest.
The Trojans have not announced their starters for the final two games of the series. Ryan Brady (0-2, 3.27) started game two of the FIU series last weekend and threw two shutout innings with four strikeouts on Tuesday night against Jacksonville State. Joe Hernandez (2-1, 5.32) started the finale at FIU and held the Panthers to just three runs on four hits over 5.1 innings; over his past six appearances he has allowed just eight runs and struck out 23 over 19 innings of work.
The Troy bullpen has been a key piece to the puzzle this season with nine wins and a collective 3.86 ERA. Thomas Austin has been as solid as they come over his 20 appearances; the junior right-hander has struck out 30 and walked just seven in 33.1 innings. Austin carries a 2.70 ERA into the weekend and has allowed just two earned runs in his last 19.2 innings of work.
Five more extra-base hits found the alleys at Riddle-Pace Field Tuesday night to push Troy's season total to 97 on the season which is the second most in the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans have legged out 69 doubles on the season and sent 22 home runs over the wall.
The Blue Raiders (20-13, 8-4) have won five of their last six Sun Belt Conference games after sweeping UALR at home last week; MTSU has played nine home league games already this season compared to just three for Troy.
Middle Tennessee leads the Sun Belt with a .972 fielding percentage as a team while ranking third with a 3.89 ERA and fourth with a .277 team batting average.
Trent Miller leads the Blue Raiders batting at a .365 clip with nine doubles, nine home runs and 30 RBIs. The Middle Tennessee bullpen has been strong on the weekends led by Paul Mittura and Joey McClung. Mittura is 2-0 with a 0.45 ERA despite walking 11 and striking out 12 in 20 innings of work and allowing opponents to hit .304 against hit. McClung is 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA and three saves.
