BOX SCORE
TROY, Ala. – A Riddle-Pace Field record crowd of 2,936 fans saw Troy shutout Alabama 9-0 Tuesday night. The Trojans became the first team since Southern Mississippi in 2007 to hold the Crimson Tide scoreless in non-conference action.
The victory was the third straight for Troy over Alabama at Riddle-Pace Field; the teams have met just three times in Troy since 1999. The nine-run margin of victory is the largest in the series by the Trojans and tied for the second largest by either team.
Ryan Brady, Nate Hill and Tyson Workman combined for the shutout on the mound and held Alabama to a season-low four hits (all singles). Austin Golden and Logan Pierce finished the game with three hits to lead the Troy offense, while Danny Collins, who was at Alabama as a freshman, hit a two-run home run and Chase Mathis finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Brady worked the opening 4.2 innings for Troy (10-9) and held Alabama (8-13) to just three hits before passing the ball off to Hill with two outs in the fifth. Brady, who was making his first career start, struck out three and walked just one. Hill (3-1) was credited with the win for the Trojans after putting the Crimson Tide on lockdown. The southpaw struck out four and allowed just a pair of base runners over his 3.1 innings. Workman worked around a walk in the ninth to close out the game.
Pitching ruled the opening third of the ball game as the teams combined for just three hits between them.
The tide turned quickly in the home half of the fourth after Pierce led off the frame by drawing a five-pitch walk off Cary Baxter out of the Alabama bullpen. Collins followed with a walk and Boone Shear reached on a Baxter error as he tried to field a sacrifice bunt.
Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard went to his bullpen again and Jakob Nixon put the Trojans on the board with an RBI ground out against Chazz Otwell. Mathis drew a walk to load the bases and Kenny Roberts then robbed Jake Harrell of a two-run single up the middle with a spectacular grab from his second base position.
The Alabama defense could maintain the momentum as shortstop Jared Reaves dropped a line drive off the bat of Ali Knowles on the very next pitch to allow another run to score. Shear then scored on a wild pitch and Golden plated the fourth run of the frame on an infield single.
Troy kept the pressure on as Pierce led off the fifth with a single and Collins hammered his third home run of the season down the line in left field to stretch the Trojan lead out to 6-0. Shear walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before Mathis singled between third and short for his first RBI of the night.
Shear, who entered the week 18th in the NCAA in RBIs with 26, drove in Troy's eighth run of the night with a two-out single in the sixth to score Golden. Mathis capped the scoring with a sharp single back up the middle after Pierce led off the eighth with a double.
Baxter (0-1), who was one of seven pitches used by Gaspard in the game, took the loss after allowing three runs – one earned – without recording an out in the fourth.
The Trojans return to Sun Belt Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at UALR.
