South Alabama Rides Big Inning to Series-Clinching Victory Over Troy

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama scored in five-of-six innings, including a seven-run third, to defeat Troy 16-4 in seven innings and clinch the opening series of Sun Belt Conference play.
Eight of the nine South Alabama starters recorded a hit in the game and six had multiple hits against seven Troy pitchers. The Jaguars (6-13, 2-1 Sun Belt) scored eight unearned (two team unearned) runs in the game after the Trojans (9-9, 1-2) committed four errors.
Troy got to South Alabama starter Anthony Izzio early as Austin Golden led off the game with a single and Danny Collins hammered a two-out home run to left field to give the Trojans a quick 2-0 lead. After the Jags took a 3-2 lead in the home-half of the first, Chase Mathis belted his first home run of the season in the second to tie the game.
South Alabama answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and Izzio settled down with four straight scoreless frames.
The bottom fell out for the Trojans in the third inning as the Jaguars scored seven runs in the frame. Troy had three errors, two balks and a wild pitch in the inning and South Alabama was on the good end of two close calls at first base.
Nolan Early, Dustin Dalken and Graham Odem all had three hits for South Alabama, while Early and Nick Zaharion each drove in three runs.
Logan Pierce finished 2-for-4 for Troy including a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. Jakob Nixon also had two hits and the first seven hitters in the Trojan lineup each recorded at least one hit.
Izzizo (3-0) almost went the distance for South Alabama but finished with four runs allowed on nine hits in 6.2 innings. Cass Abercrombie (1-1) took the loss for Troy after he allowed five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Troy returns home on Tuesday night to face Alabama at Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch between the Trojans and Crimson Tide is set for 6 p.m.
