Cossatot Results
DeQueen, Ark. – The Troy rodeo team traveled out west to the Arkansas/Texas border this past weekend to the Cossatot Community College rodeo and returned to Troy with some impressive results.
Kassandra Smith captured the team's second victory in goat tying with an average time of 19.8 seconds. Troy's other first place finish in the event came last September at Missouri Valley College. In barrel racing, Josey Owens placed sixth with an average time of 31.56 seconds. This is an event she has had success in, as she placed second in the Trojan Stampede last November.
The points contributed by Smith and Owens marked a 150 point weekend for the women, good enough for a fifth place finish.
The men's team finished the weekend with three top-3 finishes behind strong performances from freshman Nelson Wyatt, sophomore Cody Skelton and junior Zach Mabry.
Wyatt notched his first win in an event and did it with style. The young freshman set a personal best record with a 7.6 second time in the final round of the weekend. Wyatt claimed first place in the short round and the average with a combined time of 19.4 seconds. Skelton finished the short round in third place and also a third place in the average. Wyatt knows his potential in the event and was proud of his efforts on the weekend.
“I was kind of down the list in the calf roping for the year so it feels good to step up the first rodeo and get some good points towards the finals,” said Wyatt.
Skelton finished the weekend with a 20.9 second average.
Zack Mabry claimed a second place finish with an average time of 15.7 seconds, which increased his chances of competing for a Team Roping championship at the end of the year.
The men's team finished the weekend with a point total of 370 points, good enough for a fourth place finish, only 35 away from second place.
Wyatt stated that starting out the semester is good and he's proud of the team's efforts.
“Our team had a good first rodeo of the semester,” said Wyatt. “We all performed good and used the stock we had drawn to our advantage.”
The Trojan Spurs will have another long break in action, as they wait to travel to the University of Arkansas at Monticello March 29th.
