Troy Rodeo Set to Open Spring Season

TROY, Ala. – After completing the fall season last November, the Troy rodeo team will kick off the 2012 spring season this weekend when they travel to Cossatot Community College in DeQueen, Ark.
The Trojan Spurs as a team last saw action at the Trojan Stampede November 17-19, where they came away with some positives heading into the winter months. The women claimed a second place finish behind a strong weekend from Kassandra Smith, Josey Owens and Lanie Culligan.
The men's team closed out their final rodeo of the year with a fifth place finish. Cody Skelton, Lane Taylor and Nelson Wyatt all contributed to the 240 point total posted by the team.
After a half-year of competition under their belts, the Trojans will look to improve on their point total and put themselves in contention for the Ozark Region Championship at the end of the season in April.
The women's team currently sits in second place with a point total of 1,035, only 225 points behind Southern Arkansas University. Whitney Hazouri, who claimed an all-around championship in the first rodeo last fall, currently sits in first place in Breakaway Roping, an event she has a first and second place finish in.
Also competing for individual event titles are Kassandra Smith, Cassidy Aldridge, Brittney Drawdy, Kaley Dixon, Josey Owens and Lanie Culligan. Smith, who competes in both Breakaway and Goat Tying, sits in tenth and fourth place, respectively. Aldridge is Troy's only other athlete in the top 15 point rank in Breakaway Roping, where she sits in eighth.
Competing for titles in Barrel Racing are Drawdy, Dixon and Owens. Drawdy holds a fifth place standing, while Dixon and Owens are in tenth and 11th.
Hazouri is also in contention for a Goat Tying championship where she is currently in seventh place, while sophomore teammate Lanie Culligan is in 12th.
The men's team has also had their share of success as they maintain a fifth place standing in the ten team region. In contention for individual titles are Justin Walker, Cody Skelton, Nelson Wyatt, Lane Taylor, Jacob Locke, and Zack Mabry.
Walker is Troy's only Bull Rider to post a score this season and currently sits in fifth place behind strong riders from Missouri Valley and Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Wyatt, who competes in three different events, keeps his season busy with Tie Down Roping, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping. He is currently in 14th in Tie Down, 13th in Steer Wrestling and fifth in Team Roping Heeling.
Skelton, a sophomore from Holly Springs, Miss., is currently four spots ahead of Wyatt in Tie Down Roping. Taylor, one of Troy's few upperclassmen, is currently sixth in Team Roping as a Header. Locke, the two-time Alabama High School Rodeo Team Roping Champion, is currently tied for seventh in Team Roping as a Header. Also adding to the team's success in Team Roping is Mabry, who is tied for sixth.
