Dozier Claims First Troy Individual Title in Five Years

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Troy's Tolver Dozier closed out the fall season on Tuesday at the ASU Fall Beach Classic with his first-career individual title, and did it with fashion in a playoff after being tied at the end of the day's final 18 holes.
The sophomore sunk a 15-foot birdie on a playoff hole with UALR's Alfred Kerstis, to give Troy its first individual title since Sept. 18, 2007, when Michael McGrady took top honors at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate with a three round total of 212.
After carding a 68 in Monday's second round, his lowest 18 hole score of the year, Dozier came back on Tuesday to record a three-over par, 75. His 54-hole of 214 ranks second-best on the season, missing his current personal best by just four strokes.
“It was awesome to end the season this way and give me some really good momentum going into the spring,” Dozier said. “We've worked extremely hard this fall and we're starting to see signs of it paying off. I've been close all fall and I felt like I should have won several times and to do it today was really big.”
Jake Tucker, who was in good position entering Tuesday's final action, dropped to an 80 to finish at 12-over, tied for 25th, with a 228 after scoring a 73 and 75 in Monday's two rounds.
Jacob Harper carded a 10-over par, 82 on Tuesday to finish the event tied for 45th with a 54-hole total of 235.
Kyle Thommesen, coming off one of his best career finishes at the Pinetree Intercollegiate, closed out his fall season with a 21-over par, 237. Thommesen began play with a 12-over par 84 in the opening round, but improved in the final 36 holes for a 77 and 76 to salvage a tie for 50th.
Wil Clowdus' score was dropped after carding an 84, 79 and 87 in each of the rounds to finish tied for 67th at 34-over par.
“We as a team didn't play as good as we wanted to, but we saw a lot of breaks in the last couple events from the guys,” head coach Matt Terry said. “Of course, Tolver played well this week and it's nice to have a guy win and hopefully that will be contagious for the rest of the guys on the team.”
As a team the Trojans finished seventh with a 54-hole total of 914, to card their third-best 54-hole total on the season.
Conference opponent UALR, who heading into the event led the conference statistically, finished tied for second in the event after posting a 54-hole total 891, while Arkansas State claimed a ninth place finish with a 920.
No. 15 Vanderbilt took the top team honors at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club after carding an 882 over three rounds.
The Trojans will take a long break off before returning to the course competitively on March 3-5 to take part in the USF Invitational at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
