Trojan Stampede Opens with Early Success
11/15/2012 10:43:00 PM | Rodeo
TROY, Ala. – There was a brisk feeling in the air Thursday night at the Pike County Cattleman's Complex, but it didn't stop rodeo athletes, fans and area residents from flocking to the arena for the first round of the Trojan Stampede.
In just the first of two qualifying rounds, the Trojans sent five to the performance segment to open the event, as four of them came away with top five results.
Haley Brown, a Montgomery native, used the home feel to her advantage as she tied for the best time in breakaway roping, and recorded the fifth-best time in goat tying. The freshman began the breakaway roping event with an impressive 4.3 second time to pace the way for the remaining nine contenders. Tennessee-Martin's Micayla Gray also ran a 4.3, to tie with Brown.
She didn't stop there, as she also competed in goat tying. In by far one of the most interesting rodeo events, she completed her round in 14.8 seconds, good enough for a fifth place finish in the opening round.
Only four contestants in the steer wrestling event recorded a time, as Troy's Albert McBride was one of the remaining six who failed to bring the steer down.
Freshmen Morgan Sellars and Anna Niewoehner represented the Trojan Spurs in barrel racing, as the duo came away with second and third place finishes, respectively.
Sellars made the three turns in 16.54 seconds, as Niewoehner came up just behind Sellars with a 16.59.
The Trojans do not have any members competing in the bareback riding, saddle bronc riding or bull riding events. Garrett McLaughlin of Three Rivers College led the way in calf roping with an 11.8 second time, as Arkansas-Monticello's Colton Kreider finished second with a 12.6.
Aaron Lowe of Murray State finished with a 5.2 to lead the 10 competitors in steer wrestling, as Hannah Collins of East Mississippi led the way in goat tying with a 10.8.
The Trojans will compete seven times in Friday night's performance round as they prepare to make the short-go on Saturday.
Dustin Dougherty will kick off the action for Troy in the calf roping event, while Nelson Wyatt will follow in the same event.
Lanie Culligan will appear in the breakaway roping and goat tying events, while Liza Ingram will join her in breakaway, and also compete in barrel racing. Crystal Moffat will wrap up the Trojan Spur appearances on Friday in the barrel racing category.
Action is slated to begin Friday night at 7 p.m. with gates opening at 6. Advanced tickets are $5 for children and $8 for adults and can be purchased early by calling 1-800-414-5756, or emailing ask@troy.edu. Tickets at the gate will be $7 for children and $10 for adults. Any individual who shows his/her ticket stub at Santa Fe Cattle Company during the rodeo weekend will also receive a 10% off coupon for their meal.
Troy students will be admitted free with proof of ID, and door prizes will be given to those spotted wearing Troy apparel.
