ROCK HILL, S.C. – A new era of Troy women's basketball begins on Sunday as first-year head coach Chanda Rigby and the Trojans travel to take on Winthrop. The Trojans and Eagles are set to tip at 1 p.m. CST at Winthrop Coliseum.
The contest marks the season opener for both teams, who met to open the season last year at Sartain Hall. Winthrop won that game, 80-66, but a lot has changed since then.
Both sides will tip off on Sunday under first-year head coaches, and the Trojans will debut a brand new system under Rigby who has made a name at the junior college level with a pressing, up-tempo style.
Rigby comes to Troy after seven very successful seasons at Pensacola State, including trips to the NJCAA Final Four in each of the last two years and over 60 wins in those two seasons combined. Rigby also brings to Troy an entirely new coaching staff.
Troy's roster features eight returners from last year's team and six newcomers. The eight returners account for over 50 percent of Troy's scoring from a season ago, while the six newcomers have meshed well as the 14-women roster adapts to Rigby's system.
Three true freshman and three junior college transfers make up the six, with all three JUCO transfers coming from the Panhandle Conference where Rigby coached for the last seven years.
Winthrop enters Sunday's game in a bit of a different situation, despite also debuting a new head coach. Kevin Cook enters his first season at the head of the Eagles after being an assistant coach for Winthrop last year.
Cook, an assistant coaching veteran of the WNBA, has the luxury of Dequesha McClanahan, the Big South Preseason Player of the Year. McClanahan averaged 21.1 points and 7.2 assists per game last year as the Eagles finished 18-13 overall and third in the Big South.
