Trojans Claim Sixth Behind Season-Best Play from Thommesen

KENNESAW, Ga. – In just one week's span of play, the Troy men's golf team improved by 74 strokes to claim a sixth place finish at the Pinetree Intercollegiate on Tuesday after posting a 54-hole total of 910.
Kyle Thommesen entered the tournament averaging a score of 84.67 and a low round of 80. However, that changed after Tuesday's final round as Thommesen led the Trojans with a tie for sixth after posting a three round total of 222. The junior from Auburn carded by far his best rounds of the season at the Pinetree Country Club, to go along with the best finish of 2012. He entered Tuesday's final 18 holes tied for 18th, but used an even-par, 72, to record one of the best finishes of his career and finish the tournament at six-over.
Jake Tucker and Tolver Dozier both carded totals of 229 to finish tie for 23rd at 13-over par. After posting a 76 in each of Monday's two rounds, Tucker dropped that by one stroke on Tuesday to record his second 23rd-place finish of the year. Dozier finished day one by carding an even-par, 72, but dropped to an 80 in round three to finish tied for 23rd.
Jacob Harper rebounded from a tie for 50th at last week's WKU Invitational, to improve to a tie for 27th after finishing the event with a 14-over, 230.
Wil Clowdus was credited with the dropped score after posting a three round total of 239 at 23-over par.
Kennesaw State defended its home turf and won the event by 24 strokes after finishing at four-under. Kenny Beck used a course record-breaking, seven-under par 65 in round two to claim the individual championship with a seven-under par total over teammates Ben Greene and Sam Curtis.
The event ends a streak of back-to-back tournaments, as the team will have a weekend of before traveling to Gulf Shores to take part in the Red Wolves Fall Beach Classic on Nov. 5-6 at the Peninsula Golf and Raquet Club.
