Trojans Travel North for Pair of Sun Belt Matches

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Troy soccer team (6-8-1, 1-4-0) travels to Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky for a pair of matches against two of the top teams in the Sun Belt. The Trojans take on the Blue Raiders at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night and the Hilltoppers at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Troy picked up its first conference win of the season on Sunday, defeating UALR 4-0. Maddie Tieken and Louise Cheng each scored once and added an assist, while Chelsey Williams led the way with two goals. Cecilia Thorngren continued her impressive season with two assists on the day. Maddie Winter played well in goal, making seven saves and picking up her second shutout of the season.
Williams and Thorngren are tied for the team lead with 17 points. Williams has seven goals and three assists, while Thorngren has four goals and nine helpers, the most in the conference. The Trojans now have 10 different goal scorers on the season, the most since 2009, when 13 different Trojans found the back of the net.
Middle Tennessee (11-3-0, 6-0-0) currently sits atop the Sun Belt Conference standings. The Blue Raiders have won six straight, including a pair of wins over ULM and Louisiana-Lafayette last weekend. Paige Goeglein leads the way with 25 points on 11 goals and three assists. Whitney Jorgenson is right behind her, with 22 points on eight goals and six assists.
The Trojans are 1-7-1 all-time against Middle. Last season, the Blue Raiders came out victorious, 3-0.
Western Kentucky (9-4-1, 4-1-1) is alone in third in the highly competitive Sun Belt Conference. The Hilltoppers picked up four points on the road last weekend, tying Louisiana-Lafayette and defeating ULM. WKU is led by Amanda Buechel's 20 points, on eight goals and four assists.
Troy is 2-5-0 all-time against the Hilltoppers, including two straight wins. Last season, Samantha Morgan scored the game's only goal, giving the Trojans a 1-0 win on the road.
