Troy Takes Sun Belt Success to FIU

TROY, Ala. – Troy soccer prepares to take their 2-0 Sun Belt record on the road this weekend taking on tough conference opponent Florida International.

Troy (7-3-1; 2-0) defeated Louisiana Monroe 4-0 and Louisiana-Lafayette 2-0 last weekend at home to open their conference play. The wins maintain the Trojans 5-0 record at home. However, they will need to improve on a 1-2-1 road record to maintain their undefeated Sun Belt status.

"We feel really good about where we are, but have to remain focused on what's next,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “FIU is well coached and we expect them to be very tough at home.”

Florida International (5-5; 2-0) also enters the match with the momentum of an unbeaten Sun Belt start. The Golden Panthers knocked of UALR 2-1 and Arkansas State 2-1 in overtime.

Both the Trojans and the Golden Panthers look to improve on a three match win streak.

Troy has not beaten FIU since 2007 as the Golden Panthers lead the all time meeting record at 1-5. The Trojans fell to FIU 0-2 in the regular season and also 1-2 in the first round of the Sun Belt tournament.

The Trojans will be looking to redeem themselves from last year with the help of an offense that has been stepping up to the task. In the past three matches both Trojan forwards Ruth Sutcliffe and Chelsey Williams have recorded four goals each. Along with midfielder Alissa Jones who has totaled six goals this season, the Trojans will be taking a stronger attack into Miami, Florida on Friday.

“We need to remember that there will be times that we don't have the run of play and will need to fight through those times,” said Bentley. “We will need to stay focused with a high level of effort if we expect to get a result."

Troy takes on FIU at 6:30 pm in Miami, Florida on Friday.
