Troy soccer defends unbeaten Sun Belt record and home record against the Ragin Cajuns.
TROY, Ala. – The Trojan soccer team defeated Louisiana Lafayette on Sunday to improve to 2-0 in the Sun Belt and remain unbeaten on their home pitch.
Troy (7-3-1, 2-0) and Louisiana-Lafayette (4-6-1; 0-2) both settled into the extreme heat in the first half as neither team was willing to give anything to the other. Both teams went into the half at a 0-0 deadlock.
Troy made their mark on the board in the 56' as Chelsey Williams netted a pass from Ruth Sutcliffe to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The goal gives Williams her seventh of the season, four goals in the past three consecutive matches, making her the leading scorer on the Trojan squad.
Despite being down a goal the Ragin Cajuns continued to push the Trojan defense. However, it was Ruth Sutcliffe in the 88' that would secure the Trojans victory with an unassisted goal giving Troy the 2-0 win. The goal gives Sutcliffe her sixth of the season, fourth in the past three consecutive matches.
“We did a great job of creating quality chances today,” said head coach Chris Bentley, “we just could not finish them.”
The Trojan defense stood tall yet again with senior goalkeeper Ashley Branham recording eight saves in the past two shut-outs.
“We are proud of where we are but know we have a lot of work to do,” said Bentley. “The girls are in great spirits!”
Troy now has to prepare to take their exciting conference success on the road as they travel to Miami, Florida to take on FIU on Friday. The match is set for 8:30 pm. Follow Troy Athletics on twitter: @TroyAthletics for up to the minute updates.
