TROY falls to 58th-ranked Golden Panthers on the road

MIAMI, Fla. – The Troy University women saw their three-match winning streak halted at the hands of 58th-ranked FIU on Friday afternoon, their first match against a Sun Belt Conference foe.

Troy (5-9) lost the doubles point when FIU swept all three matches, but clinched the match when the number one team of Liset Brito and Maria Spenceley defeated Troy's Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt in a hard-fought 9-7 match.

The Golden Panthers (7-5) won at number three to set up the clinching point, when the team of Lisa Johnson and Rita Maisak defeated Troy's Olivia Battye and Lyubov Dorafeeva 8-1. Meanwhile at number two, the FIU team of Giulietta Boha and Christine Seredni defeated the Trojans' team of Olfa Dhaoui and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega; 8-5.

In singles play, FIU won the first match of the day at number two when Lisa Johnson defeated Olfa Dhaoui 6-0, 6-1; giving the Golden Panthers a 2-0 overall lead. The lead would expand to 3-0 when Rita Maisak defeated the Trojans' Rosaura Ramirez-Vega 6-1, 6-3.

The match that clinched the overall win for FIU came at number six when Giulietta Boha defeated Olivia Battye 6-2, 6-3.

In the other three matches, Karoline Grymel fell in a two-set thriller to 98th-ranked Liset Brito 6-4, 7-6 (10-4); while Leonie Guijt fell to Christine Deredni 6-2, 6-1 and Lyubov Dorafeeva dropped a three-set thriller to Maria Spenceley 6-1, 5-7, 10-6.

The Trojans return to action Sunday morning against Florida Atlantic University. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 am (EST) on the Boca Raton campus.
