TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Troy University men's golf team will try to stay on a hot streak as the Trojans enter play Friday in the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Southwood Golf Club.
The Trojans are coming off an eighth place finish in a loaded field at the USF Invitational last weekend and are looking to build on the strong showing.
“We are excited,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “We hope to continue to progress like we did last week by playing smart and executing the simple things.”
The homestanding Seminoles are coming off a second place finish at USF and are the defending champions of their home tournament. The field for the weekend event is stacked with quality teams from around the country.
In addition to the host Seminoles, the tournament includes No. 18 Arkansas, Cincinnati, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, Houston, Jacksonville, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Mississippi State, Mount St. Mary's, Nicholls State, North Carolina, North Carolina Charlotte, North Texas and South Florida as well as Troy.
“Arkansas is the top ranked team and Florida State is always going to be strong on their home track,” Terry said. “We just want to take care of our business, go out and make as many pars as we can. If we can do that we should be right in the mix.”
The three round event will be played over three days of 18 holes. Play started at 7:30 a.m. (et) this morning and will open at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Sunday's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. The teams will go off of holes No. 1 and 10 each day.
Southwood Golf Club is a Fred Couples/Gene Bates designed course that opened in 2002. The course will play to a par 71 covering 7,141 yards.
“It is another good field,” Terry said. “We had a good practice round on Thursday. This is the second week in a row when we felt like we got a lot done in the practice round. The guys are more sure of things going in and hopefully that will show on the course.”
The Trojans will play the opening round with Nicholls State and Kennesaw State. Troy and Nicholls State squared off in a match-play round on Wednesday in Dothan that included senior Zach Portemont, coming off a top 10 finish at USF, winning his match 7 and 6 over his opponent.
