Trojans Have Seven Winners in Last Three Years
SUN BELT WEEKLY RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS - Troy's Travis Lee has been named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The senior is Troy's third player of the week winner as Will Weathers and Vernon Taylor won back-to-back awards for the Trojans on Jan. 10 and Jan. 17.
Lee keyed a pair of Trojan victories over the past week. The Tallahassee, Fla-native hit a career-best 6-of-11 treys on Thursday night as he helped Troy to a win over in-state rival USA, connecting on 10-of-15 shots in total en route to a career-high 28 points in a 72-59 defeat of the Jags. He also grabbed four rebounds and handed out a pair of assists in the victory over the Jaguars.
On Saturday, Lee again hit some big shots as Troy knocked off West division leader Denver, 64-55. Lee's three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt completed a Troy comeback that tied the game going into halftime against the Pioneers. He then hit a big trey to halt a Pioneers run as DU was threatening in the second half before Troy pulled away.
For the week Lee connected on 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) of his 3-point attempts and 12-of-21 field goals (57.1 percent). Lee sank 5-of-6 free throws while averaging 18.0 points per game last week. Lee is shooting 48 percent from outside in Sun Belt games and leads the Trojans with 28 treys in those contests.
The Trojans are one of just six schools that have had a Sun Belt Player of the Week honoree this season and one of just three to have multiple winners. Troy is tied with Western Kentucky and North Texas who have each won the award three times, but only the Trojans have had three different players honored.
Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season, only WKU's 12 winners is more than Troy's eight player of the week selections.
Troy is in action next on Thursday when it hosts Middle Tennessee at 7:30 pm in Sartain Hall.
